Crew collecting AWC on Alligator River NWR in Dare Co., NC. Cones must be manually removed from the tips of shoots either by rubbing with the fingers, or by using a large comb. Pictured is Eric Hinesley (N. C. State Univ.) holding a handful of the rough mixture consisting of cones and small pieces of foliage. There are about 400,000 seeds per pound of clean seed.
